better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but, you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i've never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then-senator obama had no record to defend. and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was, i think, very legitimately attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that -- the failure of dodd/frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time. but, one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit of -- or something of a boost today. >> we've got the vp debate coming up. you said about joe biden he's the gift that keeps on giving. are you hoping that he's going to be giving some sprinkling of pre

presidential debate last week. they saw mitt romney going toe to toe with president obama and so now is another chance they think for the american people to say mitt romney filling out the role as commander in chief and laying out his foreign policy principles and then after the speech is over he will be meeting in a round table with a group of retired generals. again, another one of those images that the campaign would like to put out there of mitt romney as commander in chief. just to talk a little about what you and wolf were talking about a few moments ago, you go into the excerpts and you can take away a few different things. i was listening to a call yesterday and you just mentioned the situation in syria and they were talking about this idea of providing arms to the rebels in syria as an idea that would appeal to the left as to people who look at this from a humanitarian standpoint, and so it was interesting to hear the romney campaign talk about that issue from this standpoint. the other thing they raised on this conference call and that you also see in the excerpts is this idea

the people who are excited and especially going into the last five weeks of the campaign. mitt romney needs that big time. >> i'm not sure, dana, how much this plays into everything. but when barack obama is on the campaign stump, some of the things that he uses are very effective with the audience. he gets a lot of feedback from that campaign stump. and when he brought that game into that auditorium last night and started to talk about things like, you know, like ending tax breaks and getting people back to work, it seemed like those things backfired with a very powerful mitt romney standing next to him. let me show you exactly what i mean and i want to ask you about it on the other side. >> part of the way to do is to not give tax breaks to companies that are shipping shops overseas. right now, you can actually take a deduction for moving a plan overseas. i think most americans would say that doesn't make sense and all of that raises revenue. >> you said you debt a deduction for take ago plant overseas? look. i've been in business 25 years. i have no idea what you're talking

some senior romney advisors this past week. one advisor said to me there are three things, three kinds of people we need to talk to, three ds he calls it, the dissatisfied, disem pointed and disenchanted with barack obama, number one. and that what mitt romney has to do is convince people that four years from now a mitt romney presidency will be better for their personal lives. they understand on the likability question of which the president beats mitt romney so handily, they're not about to convince all these people suddenly to turn around and say, oh, we like mitt romney more than we like president obama. what they're going to try and do is say you like him enough and he can do the job and he's better able to fix things. so he's not going to try and be bill clinton here, i feel your pain. but what he's going to try to do is say i'm focused on your concerns. >> can a debate like tonight's debate really change the direction of this campaign? >> i think it can accelerate or decrease momentum one way or another. and i went back and looked at 2004 for example when you had john kerry and

of narrative that obama -- that romney needed going into this, you know, with just a couple weeks away? >> it's very much the narrative he needed, because his campaign was about to be blown away. president obama generally has been running a much better campaign than mitt romney has, but in the last week or so, the mitt romney campaign i think is getting its act together. he had a very, very good debate, obviously. he was more personal on the stump, he was in florida the last few days, he was willing to talk in an emotionally connective way. he gave a foreign policy speech today that was -- had a lot of vagueness in it but was by far and way the best foreign policy speech in my judgment he's made, the most comprehensive on the middle east. he's finding his voice, finding solidity but the polls are really hard to understand right now. not only this pew poll but we had one of the strangest days in polling in gallup i have ever seen. this morning they put out a tracking poll that said the race was tied. this afternoon they put out a second tracking poll saying obama had a five point l

anniversary. >> all jokes aside, mitt romney gain soming ground after beating president obama in last week's debate. joining us to talk about the numbers our political editor paul steinhauser. that's pretty stuff. they know how to go there. are we talking about much of a balance here after the debate? >> well, one poll does indicate a small bounce. take a look at this, suzanne. this is from gallop. they do that daily tracking poll. it's a seven-day poll. look what they did. they split it up in two. on the left column, those are the three days prior to last week's debate in denver. you see according to gallop, among registered voters nationwide, the president a five-point advantage. with the sampling area, look at the right. those are october 4th through 6th. the three days after the debate, and gallop indicates it's all tied up there. yeah, i mean, this one poll does indicate that mitt romney did get a bounce. of course, we're going to see a lot more national polls, a lot more polls. most importantly in the battle ground states later today, tomorrow, and wednesday ask thursday. keep your eye

one or two weeks from now. something new will take its place. maybe it's a good story for obama, maybe not. but voters' memories will fade some. that's why we do look at the long term and also the economic numbers where obama did get one good piece of news where with the unemployment rate falling below 8%. we now think the economy's good enough where he's probably a narrow favorite on that basis. the numbers look similar to -- >> donald trump and jack welch say those numbers are all a lot of monkey babble. >> there's a tendency. i saw some democrats in my twitter feed complaining about the pew poll when they were lauding it when they had obama up by seven. we have a tendency to get rid of data we don't like. i try to look at what all the polls say and you see some where romney has a gigantic balance, some where you haven't seen much of a bounce at all. >> you tweeted today, barack obama went from a huge favorite at 1:00 p.m. to a huge underdog at 4:00 p.m. get a grip, people. >> 1:00, the gallup poll came out and showed obama improving, up the five point lead from three before.
